BACKGROUND

Established with an endowment from the Mitsubishi group of enterprises to commemorate the centennial of Mitsubishi.

PURPOSE

To enhance science, education, culture and welfare in Japan by awarding grants for activities related to academic research, social welfare, and cultural property conservation.

LIMITATIONS

Applications from non-Japanese overseas not accepted because the Foundation has no programs for non-Japanese overseas; in special circumstances, inquiries from non-Japanese written in Japanese may be accepted; inquiries for scholarships not acceptable, because the Foundation has no programs for scholarships in Japan and abroad at present.

In principle, research should be conducted by individuals (including small groups). Applicants should be residents of Japan and have fixed research bases in Japan. There are no restrictions on an applicant's age or nationality.

2.Research Grants in the Humanities

Awarded for research in the humanities, broadly defined. Priority is given to history, religion, language, cultural anthropology, archaeology, and the arts. Applicants should be individuals or small groups with fixed research bases in Japan. There are no restrictions on an applicant's age or nationality. Grants will cover printing, binding, or publishing costs only a study applied for.

3.Grants for Social Welfare Activities

Type of support and recipient :
There are two categories under this program. In the first category, grants are awarded for private-sector projects with an innovative, experimental social welfare orientation for which it would be difficult to obtain public funding. In principle, only incorporated organizations are eligible. In the second category, grants are awarded for scientific surveys of and research on innovative, experimental social welfare activities. Both individuals and incorporated organizations are eligible. For both categories applicants must have a fixed base for activities or research in Japan. There are no restrictions on an applicant's age or nationality. Projects should be concretely planned, pioneering, experimental activities or research and those of "practical and grass-rooted" activities at the sites of social welfare are also highly appreciated. Projects whose sole purpose is the construction of facilities or purchase of equipment are not eligible.
